ANP reported that Kei Nishikori ended his tennis career with a first-round defeat to Frances Tiafoe in Tokyo. The American beat the 36-year-old Japanese player 6–4, 6–4. [1]
Nishikori entered the tournament on a wildcard. Once ranked world No 4, he was No 436 at the time of his Tokyo appearance. He reached the 2014 US Open final, losing to Marin Čilić, and won 12 ATP tournament titles during his career. [1]
Injuries disrupted his career. He underwent two elbow operations and a hip operation, and was away from the tour between 2021 and 2023. [1]
After the match, Nishikori said he had hoped to play better but was glad he had kept fighting until the end. Playing in Japan, he said, had always been special to him. [1]
