Debbie Duncan says revisiting the terrain where her son Jay Slater went missing helped her understand his final movements, ahead of a television programme about his death.

Debbie Duncan says returning to Tenerife to retrace her son Jay Slater’s steps was difficult but gave her family “more closure”. She told BBC Radio Lancashire that seeing the terrain helped her examine the time between Jay’s location being known and his saying he was lost. She said she had never doubted that his death was an accident. [1]
Jay, 19, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, disappeared on 17 June 2024 after attending a music festival on the island. His body was found after a 29-day search. An inquest concluded that his death was a tragic accident with no third-party involvement. [1]
Duncan spoke ahead of the first episode of Channel 5’s *Cause of Death*, scheduled for 21:00 BST on Wednesday. The episode retraces Jay’s steps with forensic pathologist Richard Shepherd, who carried out his post-mortem after his body was returned to the UK. [1]
Duncan said she hoped people watching the programme “may well believe the facts”. She has also called for a measure she calls Jay’s Law, which she wants to require technology companies to remove misinformation. [1]
