US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian ceasefire proposal, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials, according to an ANP/Reuters dispatch published by Nieuws.nl on 26 September. The negotiations concern an end to hostilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. [1] [5]
The Nieuws.nl account also said Trump had reportedly told aides he expected to resume bombing Iran after the US midterm elections in November. The timing of his reported rejection remains unclear. [1]
In a statement carried by NPR on 25 September, the White House described discussions through mediators as positive and constructive. [4]
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters at the United Nations on 25 September that normal maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz could be restored within seven days if the necessary conditions were met, Reuters reported. He said the seven-day period would begin once Washington accepted the plan, according to Press TV. [2] [7]
Iran’s proposed conditions include an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon; the lifting of the US blockade of Iranian ports; the release of frozen Iranian funds; and a waiver of sanctions on Iranian oil. [3] [6]
Araghchi said the proposal closely resembled commitments in a memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran in June, The New York Times reported. [3]
The precise sequence remains unclear. The New York Times described Hormuz reopening on the final day of the seven-day period. Press TV placed reopening on day six, followed by the United States entering a final agreement on day seven.
