As World News Day begins, co-organiser Branko Brkic is urging newsrooms to adapt and collaborate, while survey findings show falling trust in news.

More than 1,000 news providers have signed up to support World News Day on 28 September, as its organisers seek to make the case for professional journalism amid falling trust and changing news habits. [1]
Branko Brkic, a co-organiser of the campaign, told BBC News on 27 September that news organisations which once competed should work together and change substantially. “If we do not change the game, we are just not going to exist,” he said. He argued that an information-based society would struggle without professional news media. [1]
In an opinion piece for World News Day, Brkic said the campaign would show audiences how reporting is done, from investigations and fact-checking to corrections and local coverage. He described the day as a rallying point, not a fundraiser. [2]
The pressures are reflected in the Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report. Trust in news fell in 29 of the 48 markets it surveyed, bringing its overall measure to 37%, the lowest since it began tracking it in 2015. Across those markets, 54% of respondents used social media and video networks for online news, compared with 51% who used news organisations’ own websites and apps. [3]
Changing habits do not mean audiences have abandoned established outlets: the Reuters Institute found that just 3% of respondents relied solely on news creators, while trust in widely used individual news brands held up better than trust in news overall. Brkic, for his part, says newsrooms must earn trust by showing their sources, distinguishing news from opinion and correcting mistakes. [3] [2]
