Researchers at the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian have begun preparing a UK-wide study of personalised care for endometriosis pain. Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, it will examine whether the approach can help women whose pain is not adequately controlled by surgery or medication. [1]
Pre-menopausal participants will receive either a 12-week pain-management programme alongside standard care or standard care alone. The programme combines psychotherapy informed by cognitive behavioural therapy, specialist physiotherapy, guidance on relationships and intimacy, and medication intended to reduce side effects. Researchers will assess its effect on quality of life and its cost-effectiveness. [1]
Study lead Dr Lucky Saraswat said that, if effective, the programme could offer another option for women wishing to avoid repeated surgery or hormonal treatment, or planning a pregnancy. [1]
Charlotte McCann, 27, told the BBC that endometriosis pain had disrupted her sleep and eating and led her to leave her career in corporate finance. She welcomed research into new ways to help people with the condition. The study is still in preparation, with recruitment and results to come. [1]
