Uefa has warned that heavy Premier League spending is creating a two-speed European transfer market, with rising fees adding to future financial risks for clubs, according to BBC Sport’s account of its latest report. [1]
Premier League clubs spent an estimated €4.6bn (£4bn) in summer 2026 — more than the next eight largest European countries in the report’s comparison combined. English top-flight clubs also accounted for 29 of the 35 European transfers with fees above €50m reported for 2026. [1]
The spending gap extends to deals within England. Transfers between English clubs totalled €1.55bn (£1.33bn), which Uefa said matched the combined fee value of the next five largest league-to-league transfer flows. [1]
Uefa calculated that the 20 Premier League clubs’ transfer expenditure this year was equivalent to 56% of their annual revenue, compared with an average of 33% in the decade before Covid. That ratio is not, by itself, evidence of losses or breaches of financial rules. [1]
Andrea Traverso, Uefa’s executive director of finance, warned that sharply rising transfer values, particularly in England, would put greater pressure on clubs’ future financial results. A fall in transfer values or weaker demand from buyers could have serious implications for clubs carrying debt, he said. These are conditional risks, rather than evidence that such a downturn has occurred. [1]
The report reached a different finding on transfers within multi-club ownership structures. According to BBC Sport, Uefa found little evidence that these arrangements were being used to move players at inflated or reduced fees.
Total fees for those deals were €152m (£130.8m), against an estimated market value of €159m (£136.8m). [1]
More than half of that multi-club spending involved transfers between Chelsea and Strasbourg. The comparison concerns total fees and estimated values, so it does not establish whether every individual deal was fairly priced. [1]
