Dutch officials have acknowledged warnings that current rail arrangements could struggle to handle a surge in military transport during wartime.

The Dutch government acknowledges that the country’s rail system is not ready to move military equipment smoothly towards a front line in wartime, ANP reports. Researchers commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management say current arrangements for military transports are too ad hoc to cope with greater demand. [1]
The Netherlands is a route for US personnel and equipment moving eastwards from the ports of Rotterdam and Vlissingen. Researchers at the HCSS think tank say regular military transports work well at present. They warn, however, that scaling up would quickly strain both the railway and the people organising the movements. [1]
The researchers recommend fixed agreements and procedures to handle larger, more urgent transports. Infrastructure state secretary Annet Bertram and defence state secretary Derk Boswijk have recognised their conclusions, ANP reports. [1]
