The United Nations has listed a high-level meeting on the elimination of nuclear weapons for 29 September 2026. The UN Press notice, dated 28 September, schedules sessions for both the morning and afternoon. [1]
Speakers and any specific measures for discussion are not named in the meeting announcement. [1]
Speaking at a UN plenary in New York on 29 September 2026, Secretary-General António Guterres called this “the most dangerous nuclear moment since the end of the Cold War”. He urged the United States and Russia to negotiate a successor framework to the New START arms-control treaty. [2]
Guterres said nuclear arsenals were expanding and modernising, while technological advances were increasing the risk of mistakes and miscalculation. He also warned that safeguards built to contain nuclear dangers were breaking down. [2]
He said New START had expired earlier in 2026, leaving no binding limits on strategic nuclear arsenals. His call for a successor was an appeal to Washington and Moscow, rather than an announcement of talks. [2]
Guterres also urged states possessing nuclear weapons to resume dialogue to prevent their use, and called on nuclear-weapon states to reduce the role of those weapons in their security policies through confidence-building measures and greater transparency. [2]
