German Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to speak with former Dutch central bank president Klaas Knot in the coming days about who might succeed Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Dutch news agency ANP carried the account. [1]
Merz is also expected to speak with Spain’s Pablo Hernández de Cos in the coming weeks, according to the report, which describes him as Knot’s main rival. Knot led De Nederlandsche Bank until last year and has previously been mentioned as a possible successor to Lagarde. [1]
The talks come amid other possible changes in the ECB’s leadership. ANP reported that Lagarde had hinted she might leave before her term ends in October 2027. Executive board member Isabel Schnabel has announced her departure, while chief economist Philip Lane’s term expires in May. [1]
