Lewis Hamilton has questioned plans for a Monaco sprint in 2027, saying an extra qualifying session may appeal but a shorter race is not the answer for the event.

Monaco is due to host a Formula 1 sprint for the first time in 2027, a decision Lewis Hamilton has questioned. “It makes no sense to me,” he told journalists, including RacingNews365, which reported his comments on 30 September 2026. [1]
Under the planned format, sprint qualifying would follow just one hour of practice. RacingNews365 says the thinking behind the change is to give Monaco two qualifying sessions, because qualifying at the circuit is often considered a highlight of the weekend. It reports that Monaco would be one of 10 sprint events in 2027. [1]
Hamilton acknowledged the appeal of an additional qualifying session, saying it could be “quite cool”. He also said sprint races had brought something new to Formula 1. His objection was to treating a sprint as the answer for Monaco: in his view, the event needs a different approach from the race format used elsewhere. [1]
