Five Dutch parliamentary parties — PRO, SP, Volt, ChristenUnie and DENK — want the government to evacuate sick or injured children from Gaza for treatment in the Netherlands. PRO MP Suzanne Kröger plans to submit a motion on Thursday, 1 October, seeking to keep treatment in the Netherlands available for individual cases, ANP reported via Nieuws.nl. [1]
The proposal follows the government’s decision on 18 September to provide an additional €12 million for medical care in Gaza and the surrounding region. It earmarked €6 million to support the evacuation and treatment of about 250 children in Jordan, €2 million for patients in Egypt, and €4 million for medical work in Gaza and the West Bank. The package does not allocate funding for new evacuations to the Netherlands. [2]
The Dutch Paediatric Society welcomed the regional funding but said some children with complex injuries, congenital conditions or cancer need specialist care that is not available in Gaza or nearby countries quickly enough. It called for phased evacuations to the Netherlands. [4]
At a parliamentary hearing on 24 September, a WHO representative said patients needing highly specialised care would still require transfers to the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. A Save the Children representative said that, among roughly 3,000 Gazans the organisation had helped access medical care in Egypt, 2% could not be treated there. [7]
The government’s September letter lists evacuation beyond the nearby region, including to Europe, as a lower priority rather than ruling it out. Kröger and SP MP Dobbe have asked whether transfers to the Netherlands remain an option and when the first evacuations to Jordan are expected. [2] [5]
Dutch development cooperation minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma told parliament on Thursday that the cabinet would not bring children from Gaza to the Netherlands for medical treatment. He called it a change from the previous cabinet’s policy. Five children from Gaza were brought to the Netherlands under the previous caretaker cabinet, ANP reported.
