The European Commission is due to present a proposal for a communications system that would help emergency services work together during cross-border incidents, ANP reported via Nieuws.nl. The plan covers responses to fires, floods, terrorist attacks and drone threats to critical infrastructure. It would be open to EU countries and other Schengen countries. [1]
Under the proposal, EU countries would gradually move emergency-service communications towards broadband technology such as 5G, allowing teams to share photos and video as well as audio. European companies would develop the broadband technology and other critical components. A satellite-supported fallback network is envisaged for times when the digital network is overloaded or unavailable, while information would be exchanged on secure devices. [1]
Member states would decide whether their defence services could use the system. If EU governments and the European Parliament approve the plan, a first group of countries could begin using it in 2030, with EU-wide access for emergency services envisaged by 2036. [1]
