US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end regional fighting. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he said: “I rejected their deal.” He added that he liked making deals, but had turned down this one. [1]
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the strait could reopen and normal shipping could resume within seven days if the necessary conditions were met. President Masoud Pezeshkian said the process would begin on the day the US accepted the proposal. The timetable therefore depended on US acceptance, rather than setting a fixed reopening date. Qatar has been involved in indirect US-Iran talks. In an interview published on Friday, its prime minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said he believed the discussions had made positive progress. [4]
The strait has not been entirely closed to oil traffic. Preliminary ship-tracking data cited by Reuters counted 33.7 million barrels of outbound crude aboard 19 tankers so far in the week beginning 20 September. The tally excludes vessels travelling with their transponders switched off. [6]
