In his first Labour conference speech as prime minister, Burnham announced plans for a national commission to examine options for electoral reform and invited other parties to take part. He has previously backed moves towards proportional representation, but did not specify a replacement for first-past-the-post. [1]
Under the current system, the candidate with the most votes in each constituency wins the seat. Debate about changing it has grown since Labour secured a large parliamentary majority in 2024 with 34% of the vote. [1]
The Liberal Democrats would support a change to the voting system, BBC News reported. Within Labour, deputy leader Lucy Powell said she personally backed electoral reform but acknowledged that parts of the party opposed it. She did not identify a preferred alternative. [1]
The next general election must be held by 2029. Burnham has not named a leader or start date for the proposed commission, leaving its immediate next steps open. [1]
