Dutch police said on 28 September that they had arrested a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam earlier in the month as part of an investigation into the hacking group ShinyHunters. Police did not name him or give details of the allegations. [4]
Benjamin Korper, chief executive of cybersecurity firm Neo Security, told Reuters that the arrested man was Pepijn van der Stap, the company’s offensive security lead. Dutch broadcaster NOS also identified him as Pepijn van der S., citing its sources. ShinyHunters told Reuters that Van der Stap had “no association” with the group. [2] [3]
Korper said he had hired an outside firm to investigate whether Van der Stap had hacked Neo Security or its clients. So far, the inquiry had found no evidence that he had done so, Korper said. [2]
KrebsOnSecurity reported that Van der Stap was convicted in a separate data theft and extortion case in 2023 and sentenced to four years in prison, one of them suspended. [5]
The man was due before a detention-review chamber at Rotterdam District Court on Tuesday, 29 September, for a decision on whether he should remain in custody. Police said they would provide more information that day. [4]
Dutch police suspect the 24-year-old Amsterdam man arrested in the ShinyHunters investigation of attempting to solicit two murders abroad. Police said the separate suspicion is linked to information found on his laptop. [7] [8]
ShinyHunters has denied that the man has any association with the group. That denial concerns the hacking investigation, not the separate murder allegation. [2]

A Rotterdam court ordered the man held in pre-trial detention for a further 90 days on 29 September. [7] [8]
FBI director Kash Patel said investigators were working with partners to pursue further leads arising from the Dutch arrest of a man suspected of involvement in ShinyHunters. In a post on X reported by the BBC and Associated Press, Patel said the investigation was continuing. [9] [8]
Patel said the Dutch High-Tech Crime Unit had acted in coordination with FBI investigators and described the man as one of the group’s alleged leaders. Dutch police described him more narrowly as suspected of playing a role in ShinyHunters. [8]
