The EU generated an estimated 57.9 million tonnes of food waste in 2024, up 0.7% from 57.5 million tonnes a year earlier, Eurostat said. That works out at around 129 kg per resident across the food supply chain, not just in homes. [1]
Households generated 53% of the total, equivalent to 69 kg per person. Restaurants and other food services accounted for 12%, or 15 kg per person. [1]
Food and drink manufacturing contributed 19%, while primary production and retail and other food distribution each accounted for 8%. [1]
The figures include both edible and inedible parts of food. Eurostat used the latest available figures for Bulgaria, Germany and Romania, where 2024 data were unavailable, to calculate the EU estimate. [1]
