New research by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) found that PFAS concentrations in adults’ blood have fallen since 2016–17. The latest study tested 967 blood donors, ANP reported. [1]
In that group, 71% had levels above a health-based guidance value, compared with 99% in earlier studies. Exceeding the value does not mean someone is ill or will become ill, but higher PFAS concentrations can affect the body, including the immune system. [1]
RIVM considers restrictions on PFAS, including European bans on certain substances, a likely important reason for the decline. [1]
The study found elevated amounts of seven types of PFAS in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, though the reason remains unclear. Near the Chemours plant in Dordrecht, PFOA levels were still slightly elevated but lower than in 2016 and 2017. [1]
