Pope Leo reiterated his determination to end the abuse of children by Catholic clergy during a two-hour meeting with seven French survivors on Sunday, the Vatican said. He spoke privately with each survivor and heard proposals to improve the Church’s safeguarding measures. [1]
Earlier that day, Leo called on the Church to acknowledge its shortcomings and heal its wounds. The meeting took place during his four-day visit to France. [1]
Local church leaders hope the visit will help restore the Church’s standing. A 2021 report estimated that 330,000 French children were abused by Catholic clergy and lay leaders over the preceding 70 years. [1]
