Syngenta has proposed ceasing operations at its chemical plant in Grangemouth, Scotland. The move is set to affect 377 workers, but the company says it will consult trade unions before making a final decision. [1]
The agricultural chemicals firm says the plant costs significantly more to run than its other production facilities and has struggled to compete as international competition increases. It says it will consider alternative paths for the site during consultation. [1]
Scottish Economy Secretary Stephen Flynn said his government strongly opposed any reduction or closure. UK Reindustrialisation Minister Blair McDougall said the UK and Scottish governments had explored support options, but that Syngenta had made its proposal on a commercial basis. [1]
Scottish Enterprise awarded Syngenta £2.2m more than a year ago to expand production at the site. Flynn has also called for funding from a separate £200m UK government pledge for Grangemouth, saying none has yet been allocated. [1]
