Thames Valley Police and Hampshire police have formed a six-dog team to detect drugs linked to spiking as students return to university cities. [Source 1]

The forces say the dogs — Maverick, Puma, Dusty, AJ, Reggie and Major — are trained to detect drugs linked to spiking, including small quantities and drugs in liquid form. The joint operation is timed for the start of the university term, when new students begin going out in the region’s university cities. [1]
Dog handler PC Dan Honey said an indication from a dog would draw officers’ attention to someone carrying something of interest. Police say they want to identify potential offenders and prevent spiking. An indication alone does not mean a spiking offence has occurred. [1]
Thames Valley Police said spiking incidents in its region ‘remain low’ but that prevention matters as much as enforcement. Campaigner Sharon Gaffka welcomed the measure, saying it would be reassuring to know the dogs were on patrol. [1]
