September was provisionally the UK’s joint fourth-warmest on record, with a mean temperature of 14.6°C — 1.6°C above the long-term average — BBC Weather reported, citing Met Office figures. It was the eighth consecutive month in which the UK average was more than 1°C above normal. [1]
BBC Weather says 2026 is on course to be one of the UK’s warmest years on record, with above-average temperatures forecast for the rest of the year. In the separate Central England Temperature series, every month of 2026 so far has been warmer than average, and temperatures are running 2.6°C above average. [1]
Rainfall varied sharply in September. The UK received 104% of its usual total, but Scotland had nearly 40% more than average. Parts of Yorkshire received less than 20% of their usual rainfall, while Lincolnshire had around 30%. [1]
Environment Agency chief executive Philip Duffy said September’s rain had not reversed water deficits left by a dry spring and record-hot summer. The agency has said rainfall would need to be 20% above normal over the following seven months for all areas to be considered out of drought. [1]
