An airstrike near a market in Kyauktaw, in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, reportedly killed 50 people and injured nearly 60 on Monday. UN secretary-general António Guterres condemned the attack on Tuesday and called for those responsible to be held accountable. [1]
The Arakan Army, which controls Kyauktaw and is fighting Myanmar’s military, reported 50 deaths and at least 58 injuries. Aid worker Wai Hun Aung gave Reuters the same figures, while AFP reported a matching account from another rescuer. An earlier local account put the number injured at 67. [4] [5] [7]
The Arakan Army accused the military of striking the crowded market area. Witnesses told AFP that military aircraft bombed the location around midday. A Myanmar government spokesperson did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment. The military has previously said it exercises maximum restraint to avoid civilian harm. [2] [4] [5]
UN human rights chief Volker Türk said the attack raised serious concerns about respect for international humanitarian law. [1]
Guterres urged all parties to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid through. His spokesperson said continuing violence in Rakhine meant conditions did not currently exist for the safe and voluntary return of displaced people, including Rohingya refugees. [1]
