A new UK duty on vaping products is taking effect at £2.20 per 10ml of e-liquid. It applies whether or not a product contains nicotine. Higher shop prices are expected, though sellers have six months to sell existing stock at pre-duty prices, so many customers may not see an immediate increase. [1]
Health minister Karin Smyth said making vapes less affordable is intended to help tackle youth vaping. Tobacco duty has also risen by £2.20 per 100 cigarettes or 50g of tobacco. HMRC said the tobacco increase maintains a financial incentive for smokers to switch to vaping. [1]
John Dunne, director general of the UK Vaping Industry Association, opposed the duty, arguing that tougher enforcement against illegal sellers would better protect young people without making legal vaping more expensive for adults avoiding cigarettes. [1]
