Teams with at least 60% possession won 36.4% of the games in which they reached that mark across the season’s first 50 Premier League matches, BBC Sport reports, down from 53.5% in 2023–24. The shift raises a tactical question, not a simple verdict on possession football. [1]

In an analysis published on 28 September 2026, BBC Sport football tactics correspondent Umir Irfan suggests that greater man-to-man pressure is making it harder to build attacks from the back. Compact defences, he argues, can also frustrate teams that have most of the ball, making space elsewhere on the pitch more attractive to attack. [1]
Chelsea offer a striking example, but not a simple rule. They scored four goals against Brighton despite having 25.6% possession and completing 146 passes — both their lowest recorded figures in a Premier League match since records began in 2003–04. Across their opening five matches, however, Chelsea averaged 51.4% possession when level, 34.5% when ahead and 67.2% when behind. How much of the ball a team has can change markedly with the score. [1]
Irfan cautions against writing off possession football. Arsenal’s share of the ball falls from 60.4% to 56.6% when they lead, while Manchester City still average 64.9% when ahead. Protecting a lead does not require every team to play the same way. [1]
