Elfyn Evans has won his first World Rally Championship drivers’ title after rival Oliver Solberg crashed just short of the finish on the final stage of Rally Italia Sardegna. Evans and co-driver Scott Martin had entered the season-ending round 21 points ahead, but their lead was down to one point before the last of 17 stages. [1]
Solberg needed to beat his Toyota team-mate on that stage to earn enough bonus points for the title. He was on course to win it when he crashed two corners from the finish, with less than 100 metres remaining. [1]
The crash did not cost Solberg the rally victory: he finished almost a minute ahead of Sébastien Ogier, while Evans placed fifth. Evans took the championship with 243 points, five ahead of Solberg; Sami Pajari finished third on 237. [1]
Evans, 37, becomes the third British man to win the WRC drivers’ title, following Colin McRae in 1995 and Richard Burns in 2001. [1]
