German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Saturday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting lasted just over 20 minutes, ZDFheute reported. [3]
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the meeting took place at Germany’s request. [2]
Citing delegation sources, ZDFheute reported that Wadephul urged Russia to end what he described as its escalation towards Germany, Europe and NATO. He said incidents including an attempted attack in Leipzig would not weaken German support for Ukraine, and held open the possibility of more constructive relations if Moscow showed a serious willingness to end the war and help restore lasting peace in Europe. The distinction is between foreign-minister meetings and all political contact: former German chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin in November 2024. [8]
