Greggs has proposed closing manufacturing sites at North Lakes near Penrith, Pettigrews in Kelso, Seaham in County Durham and Enfield in London. Distribution would continue at Enfield. The plans could lead to 740 job losses, but Greggs says no final decisions have been made. Staff consultation is expected to begin soon. [1]
Manufacturing at Treforest in Wales would also be affected, though the site would remain a distribution centre. Greggs plans to reduce the range of products made at Clydesmill Glasgow and Manchester, stop making tinned bread at Gosforth and buy some products from specialist suppliers. Its shops would not be affected, the company said. [1]
Greggs expects the changes to take place over two and a half years. The restructuring is expected to cost about £60m, including disruption costs and redundancy payments. The company projects savings of about £20m across the 2028 and 2029 financial years combined. Chief executive Roisin Currie said the proposals were intended to improve efficiency. [1]
The announcement came as Greggs reported sales growth of 7.7% in the three months to 26 September compared with the same period last year. It expects a “modestly improved outcome” for 2026. [1]
