US investment firm KKR and German energy group RWE have joined forces over a possible bid for Uniper, ANP reports, citing a Bloomberg account based on unnamed sources. It is unclear whether the pair have submitted an offer or what stake and price they might seek. [1]
Germany began a sale process for the nationalised energy company in May. Bloomberg also reported that Norway’s Equinor and a consortium of Brookfield Asset Management and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board had made non-binding bids. [1]
The German government rescued Uniper in 2022 after it suffered losses running into billions when Russia’s Gazprom stopped fulfilling long-term gas supply contracts following the invasion of Ukraine. Uniper also operates power stations in the Netherlands. [1]
Uniper’s employee council opposes a sale, arguing that a stock-market listing would better protect the company’s independence. A listing remains an option for the German government. [1]
