Bodhana Sivanandan has become the youngest player to earn the woman grandmaster (WGM) title, aged 11, after securing her third and final qualifying norm while representing England at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The International Chess Federation, FIDE, confirmed the achievement, BBC News reported. [1]
Sivanandan, from Harrow in north-west London, played all 11 rounds on England’s top board and finished with eight points. She had already passed the 2300 rating threshold required for the title. [1]
The previous WGM age record was held by Kateryna Lagno, who earned the title at 12. WGM is the highest women-only chess title; it is distinct from the higher, open grandmaster title. [1]
Sivanandan also earned her second international master norm in Samarkand. Players normally need three such norms and a rating of at least 2400 for that higher title. [1]
