A thick ring of new shoots is growing around the stump of the Sycamore Gap tree beside Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, three years after it was illegally felled. The National Trust fenced off the stump after the felling. Its general manager, Andrew Poad, described the growth as encouraging and said efforts to reduce soil compaction and limit disturbance around the roots were paying off. Rangers will monitor the stump and decide how to manage it as it develops. [1]
Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers cut down the tree on 28 September 2023. Both were jailed for four years and three months in July 2025. [1]
Whether the shoots will develop into a lasting tree remains uncertain. The National Trust has also grown saplings from seedlings preserved after the felling and donated them to community groups and charities. [1]
