Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle says a tumour at five left him unable to move his neck and cast doubt on his future in football.

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has spoken about having a tumour in his neck at the age of five. He told BBC Sport that he could not move his neck and, at the time, it was unclear whether he would be able to keep playing football. The experience taught him to value his health and the chance to pursue his ambitions, he said. [1]
A serious knee injury later cut short Jaissle’s playing career, and he retired in 2014. He said he found renewed enjoyment in football during a placement as an assistant youth-team coach at RB Leipzig. [1]
Jaissle has lost one of his first seven matches as Newcastle head coach, across all competitions. He said introducing his approach had been tougher than expected after a short, crowded pre-season. [1]
