Siegmien Staphorst, chair of the Surinamese organisation Afrikan Kulturu fu Sranan (NAKS), said King Willem-Alexander should take concrete steps now that he has received the research. She made the call in remarks to the Dutch news agency ANP reported by Nieuws.nl on 2 October. The king received five substantial books on Friday; Staphorst said they gave him more information to act on. He apologised for the history of slavery during a visit to Paramaribo in December 2025.
NAKS is working with 21 other organisations on a development programme for descendants of enslaved people. Staphorst said they were commissioning research into disadvantages affecting health, education, housing and land rights. She also wants Surinamese people to be informed about the roles of the royal house and other colonial rulers. [1]
Staphorst called for a broad discussion of colonial-era names and monuments in Suriname, while acknowledging that views on them are sharply divided. She expects the research to be offered to the Surinamese government and civil-society organisations. [1]
