Speaking to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Badenoch said people should be rewarded for hard work and that welfare should be a “safety net, not a lifestyle”. She described herself as a “classic old school Conservative”. [1]
In her 100-page essay *The Right Way*, Badenoch argues that the previous Conservative government failed to reverse structural changes made by Labour. BBC News reports that she proposes tax cuts, less regulation and a return to pre-pandemic civil service staffing levels as part of a plan for business-led growth. [1]
The Conservatives have pledged to end the loss of childcare entitlement for parents earning more than £100,000. They have also promised 50,000 new prison places, proposing to cut overseas aid to £1bn a year to fund the expansion, with the aim of ending early release of offenders. [1]
The prison pledge follows a much smaller net increase during the Conservatives’ 14 years in government. Around 14,142 places were added, while 13,660 were lost, mainly through deterioration and closures — a net gain of about 500, BBC News reports. [1]
Labour Party chair Bridget Phillipson criticised the plans, saying the Conservatives were “stuck in the past” and “out of touch” with what people across Britain want to see. [1]
