Lovely Professional University in Punjab suspended regular classes for 10 days from 28 September and postponed mid-term exams after protests over an alleged rape turned violent. Students have left the campus, while those staying have been advised to remain in their hostels or other accommodation. [1] [2] [3]
The protests began overnight on 26–27 September. Campus property was damaged, furniture and vehicles were set alight, and protesters blocked National Highway 44 for more than 15 hours. Police later restored traffic. [1] [2] [3]
Police have registered a rape case against an unidentified suspect and formed a special investigation team. The university denies that an assault occurred; its dean, Sorabh Lakhanpal, told NDTV the allegation had been confirmed as a rumour. Police say they cannot yet determine whether a rape took place. They have not identified an alleged victim or suspect, and footage reviewed so far has shown no evidence of an attack, though officers have not examined all the campus cameras. [1] [3] [5]
Police deny carrying out a baton charge against students. BBC News reported footage showing officers striking protesters with canes, while The Indian Express reported a baton charge. [1] [3]
