Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said at his weekly press conference that there would be no new compensation payments in response to a study of the House of Orange’s colonial role. He pointed instead to an existing multiyear programme established after official apologies for the Netherlands’ history of slavery. [1]
The government made €200 million available for that programme in 2023, after apologies from the government and King Willem-Alexander. Jetten said substantial funding had been set aside for plans already under way. [1]
Nieuws.nl reports that the study found the royal family had been involved in colonialism ‘with conviction’ and had gained the equivalent of nearly €576 million. That figure refers to the study’s reported estimate of historical gains, not a proposed compensation payment. [1]
Jetten said he was deeply impressed that the king had requested the study himself. He hoped it could help bring reconciliation to people hurt by the colonial past and called for greater awareness of its lasting effects. [1]
