Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell is no longer receiving legal aid, the Scottish Legal Aid Board confirmed to the BBC. He was jailed in June for embezzling £400,310.65 from the party. [1]
The board has not said why his legal aid ended. It said legal aid and data protection law restrict what it can disclose about individual applications. Murrell was granted legal aid in 2025. The Scotsman reported that he was told on 28 July he would receive no support with his legal bills. [1]
The BBC also cited a Herald report that £4,831 in legal aid had been spent on Murrell’s case. The board told the newspaper it expected further payments because legal representatives could still submit bills. [1]
