In the Netherlands, 21% of people who inherited at least €50,000 after their last parent died in 2018 moved between 2018 and 2020. That compares with 14% of a group whose parent died four years later and who then inherited at least €50,000, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) found. [1]
CBS followed more than 30,500 people whose last parent was born between 1936 and 1945 and died in 2018. Of those people, 31% received an inheritance registered with the tax authority, while 14% of the whole group received at least €50,000. [1]
Among those who moved after inheriting at least €50,000, the share living in a home of 150 square metres or more rose from 27% to 46%. In the comparison group of movers, it rose from 30% to 39%. The share living in an owner-occupied home also rose more sharply among the heirs: from 72% to 83%, against 71% to 73% in the comparison group. [1]
Average mortgage debt among those who inherited at least €50,000 fell by €13,000 between 2018 and 2020, a reduction €10,000 greater than in the comparison group. CBS also found a rise in the share of heirs living in homes with solar panels, but has no figures on other home improvements, such as new kitchens. [1]
