European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announced the funding in New York on Saturday, as the UN General Assembly met there, ANP reported. The package covers support for displaced people in Africa and people affected by crises elsewhere. [1]
Of the nearly €710 million announced, €380 million is earmarked for measures including migrant protection, voluntary return and refugee reception in Africa. A further €10 million is designated for peace initiatives in the Great Lakes region, €7.5 million for tackling Ebola in Congo, and €60 million for primary healthcare in Ethiopia. [1]
Brussels also wants to release €252 million from its emergency reserve: €97 million for Africa, €103 million for the Palestinian territories and Lebanon, and €52 million for Ukraine. That part of the package still requires approval from the budget authority. [1]
