German Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to speak with former Dutch central bank president Klaas Knot in the coming days about who might succeed Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Merz is also expected to speak with Spain’s Pablo Hernández de Cos in the coming weeks, according to the report, which describes him as Knot’s main rival. Knot led De Nederlandsche Bank until last year and has previously been mentioned as a possible successor to Lagarde. [1]
