Wakefield finished fourth in Super League and faced a Wigan side that had won 16 successive matches. Trinity fell behind early in Saturday’s play-off semi-final, then scored 33 unanswered points to win 33–6. BBC Sport reported that Wakefield took advantage of a second-half yellow card for Wigan’s Adam Keighran. [1]
Winger Tom Johnstone scored two of Wakefield’s five tries. He told BBC Two that winning a Super League Grand Final had once seemed a distant dream. Wakefield were relegated in 2023 but returned to the top flight at the start of 2025. Coach Daryl Powell said relegation had given the club a chance to stabilise the team, bring in staff and recruit players who helped it leave the Championship. [1]
Wakefield will face Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford on 3 October. Whichever side wins will become a Super League champion for the first time. [1]
