The European Space Agency has published a radar image of the sea beneath Typhoon Surigae’s clouds as the storm moved north-east about 200 km south of Japan’s Shikoku island on 28 September. The false-colour image was captured by a Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite. [1]
Dark blue marks relatively calm seas at the storm’s eye, while an orange-yellow ring shows where the radar detected rough water and strong winds. ESA says lighter-blue areas show a different radar signal that could be caused by lower winds, less sea-surface movement or rain. [1]
ESA reported gusts of up to 240 km/h and waves of up to 7 metres when the image was captured. By 1 October, Surigae was roughly 200 km south of Tokyo. ESA said on 2 October that it had weakened to a tropical depression, with maximum wind speeds of 55 km/h. [1]
