The European Commission has drawn up a five-point plan to respond more quickly to sudden large arrivals of asylum seekers and strengthen security at the EU’s external borders. Arrivals in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta this summer were cited as an example of the pressures the plan is intended to address. [1]
The proposals include a stronger mandate for Frontex, the EU border agency. Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner said the agency should be able to act more quickly. Under the plan, it would support a member state within 24 hours if that country requested help during a migration crisis. Frontex would also have a larger role in returning people whose asylum claims have been rejected. [1]
Brunner said many elements still need to be developed, including a European framework for emergency responses. The plan also calls for improved warning systems, including monitoring of social media. [1]
