Kirkcudbright Academy in south-west Scotland has paid tribute to former pupil Arkadii Petrov, who it said had been killed while serving with Ukrainian forces after returning to his home country. He had recently turned 21. [3]
Petrov arrived in Kirkcudbright with his family after they fled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He spent a year at the academy completing his S6 studies before returning to Ukraine to fight. The school said he was killed in the east of the country. [3]
In the tribute, reported by Greatest Hits Radio, the academy’s rector, Anthony Tuffery, remembered Petrov as polite, respectful and hardworking. He said everyone at the school was saddened by the news and offered condolences to Petrov’s family and friends. [3]
Peter Kormylo, an archivist at the Ukrainian Prisoner of War chapel in Lockerbie, where Petrov attended services, told the BBC the local Ukrainian community was upset by his death. Petrov would be “forever 21”, he said. [2]
