In a personal top ten published by BBC Sport on 1 October, senior journalist Alex Bysouth puts Steve McManaman second, Harry Kane third and Jude Bellingham fourth behind Bale. Owen Hargreaves, Scott McTominay, David Beckham, Jadon Sancho, Fikayo Tomori and Kieran Trippier complete the list, in that order. [1]
Bysouth points to Bale’s five Champions League winner’s medals with Real Madrid, which he says exceed the total held by the other nine players on his list combined. He places Kane just ahead of Bellingham, favouring the striker’s individual form at Bayern Munich despite Bellingham’s Champions League title. [1]
Hargreaves is an unusual inclusion, Bysouth acknowledges: he was born and raised in Canada and joined Bayern Munich at 16. Bysouth cites his 42 England caps as his reason for including him. [1]
