The end of the Dutch contribution closes nearly 12 years of involvement in the anti-ISIS mission. The government says no Dutch military personnel remain in Iraq.

The Netherlands ended its military contribution to Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in Iraq on 30 September, the government announced. Defence Minister Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius and Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen informed parliament that day. [1]
Dutch involvement began in October 2014. Dutch F-16s carried out air operations against ISIS targets, while military personnel trained, advised and supported Iraqi and Kurdish security partners. Yesilgöz-Zegerius said more than 6,300 Dutch military personnel had served in Iraq over the past 12 years. [1]
Iraq and the United States agreed in 2024 to wind down OIR in Iraq, the Dutch government said. The mission continues to operate in Syria. [1]
Dutch personnel and advisers remain involved in the separate NATO Mission Iraq, which focuses on strengthening Iraq’s security sector. That mission has operated from Italy since early 2026 amid worsening security conditions; the Dutch government says it no longer has a military presence in Iraq. [1]
