Dutch Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz said EU countries needed to catch up across all areas of military preparedness after defence ministers met in Brussels on Monday. More countries needed to do more, she said, and they needed to work more intelligently. [1]
Dutch news agency ANP reported that ministers were presented with the EU’s first defence-readiness report, which is not public. The meeting was part of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council. ANP said a leaked summary warned that rearmament was moving too slowly and ineffectively to provide strong defence and sufficient deterrence by 2030. [1] [2]
Yeşilgöz said several countries, including the Netherlands, had called at the meeting for less discussion and more delivery. She described defence as a shared responsibility. [1]
Yeşilgöz said there were no gaps at present and no reason to panic. Even so, she warned that much work remained and that countries should not be naive. [1]
