Buckingham Palace says King Charles will not sidestep Britain’s history of slavery on a Caribbean visit planned for later in October. Charles and Queen Camilla are due to visit the Bahamas and Guyana, followed by Antigua and Barbados. [1]
Citing Reuters, Nieuws.nl reports that at least 12.5 million Africans were taken away and sold into slavery between the 15th and 19th centuries. It estimates that Britain was responsible for transporting about 3.2 million Africans. [1]
The palace said the programme would recognise what Charles has called the darkest days of Britain’s past, while concentrating chiefly on the present and future of the countries he visits, in keeping with their wishes. [1]
