The UN Security Council was expected to vote on Tuesday, 29 September, on a draft resolution extending the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force in Haiti by six months, until 31 March 2027. UN listings identify a Council meeting on Haiti, but give no vote result. [1] [2] [3]
The force is a non-UN multinational mission authorised in September 2025 to combat armed gangs. Its initial 12-month mandate is nearing expiry. The proposed resolution, drafted by Panama and the United States, would also request continued logistical and operational support through the UN Support Office in Haiti. [1]
Security Council Report said China and Russia appeared to have sought a shorter, three-month renewal and an independent strategic review. The draft prepared for the vote instead kept the six-month term and omitted the review. [1]
The Council authorised the Gang Suppression Force last year to succeed the Multinational Security Support mission. A renewal would determine the length of its next mandate. [1]
The Security Council adopted Resolution 2829 (2026) on 29 September by 12 votes to none, with China, Pakistan and Russia abstaining. The decision extends the Gang Suppression Force’s mandate in Haiti until 31 March 2027. [4]
The Council asked the UN Secretary-General to report every six months on progress against previously agreed benchmarks. It also stressed that the force must comply with applicable international law, including human rights law. [4]
Haiti’s representative welcomed the renewal but said the force still needed personnel, equipment and operational capabilities to become fully operational. Jamaica’s representative, speaking for CARICOM, said its deployment had been slower than optimal.
