The White House says the United States has no plans to sell weapons to China. The State Department also denied that there was an offer or a plan, and said US law prohibits such sales. The statements followed remarks by David Perdue, the US ambassador to China, about a question President Donald Trump had put to Xi Jinping. [1] [3]
Speaking on Fox News Sunday on 27 September, Perdue said Trump had asked Xi whether he wanted to buy American weapons. Perdue said the US sells arms to other countries, but gave no date for the exchange he described. [2]
The question arose during a discussion of Taiwan. Host Shannon Bream raised concerns from US lawmakers about delayed aid and weapons orders for the island, and asked whether Washington was withholding support to appease Xi. Perdue rejected that suggestion and said Trump and Xi continued to discuss future US weapons sales to Taiwan. [2]
