Dean McLellan, 38, has been jailed for two and a half years after admitting inflicting grievous bodily harm on a 78-year-old woman he pushed over outside a shop in Hebburn. He was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court. [1]
The court heard that McLellan, who did not know the woman, spoke to her on 23 June. CCTV showed her giving him something believed to be money. He later shoved her, causing her to fall backwards. At hospital, she was found to have a broken right wrist and a fractured vertebra. [1]
The woman’s daughter told the court that her mother now struggled to walk, could no longer hold a cup of tea or bathe herself, and was frightened to go outside. She said her mother’s dementia had become more advanced. Judge Thomas Moran called McLellan’s behaviour ‘despicable’ and said the attack had ended the woman’s previously active social life. [1]
